What Is a Booster Compressor ?
A booster compressor is specially meant for boosting the pressure of precompressed air or gas to finish off with a higher-pressure level. Established in 2008, ClearWater Beverages Inc. is one of the largest manufacturers of fine bottled water in the USA. Located in Fresno, California, ClearWater operates three production lines and has the capacity to produce 180,000 PET bottles every single day. ClearWater distributes to 23 states in the USA and exports to Canada and Mexico.
In accordance to ClearWater’s commitment to quality and sustainability, the company has obtained ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management) certifications, SQF (Safe Quality Food) certifications, and has met and maintains compliance with FDA regulations, for the production of bottled water.
In 2023, ClearWater had some problems with their infrastructure. The compressed air system was installed in 2015, and was starting to show age and inefficiency. The 5 problems they were facing were:
- A 28% increase in energy costs with no increase in productivity. This had occurred over the past 3 years and was due to the inefficiency of the systems.
- Possible Oil Contamination: The system had a lubricated compressor, that, combined with the additional required filtration, had two, minor, oil contamination incidents.
- Inconsistent Pressure: It was impossible to achieve and sustain the 40 bar (peak) pressure required by the system. This caused issues with the thickness of the walls of the bottles being manufactured.
- System Downtime: The system was breaking down on average 47 hours a quarter. This impacted the entire production schedule of the system.
After a thorough review of the systems and processes (which took 3 days with our engineering team), an oil-free booster compressor system was designed to meet the needs of the PET bottle blowing processes.

MetalPro Fabrication LLC is a Houston, Texas based full service precision metal fabrication company. Established in 1995, they manufacture tailor-made metal parts for the aerospace, defense, and energy industries. MetalPro’s 85,000 square foot production facility is equipped with eight fiber laser cutting machines ranging from 4kW to 20kW, and is staffed by 45 skilled technicians.
MetalPro is certified with AS9100D certification (aerospace quality management) and is ITAR registered, which authorizes them to take on defense contracts. They service large aerospace OEMs and tier-1 suppliers.
In 2022, MetalPro overhauled their laser cutting fleet by adding two 15kW fiber laser systems. However, their nitrogen supply infrastructure became an immediate bottleneck:
- Nitrogen consumption: newly added high powered laser systems needed more nitrogen flow cut stainless steel and aluminum.
- Cylinder management nightmare: They used 180+ nitrogen cylinders a month, which required delivery schedules and added safety hazards from cylinder storage.

GreenH2 Mobility Inc. has been developing hydrogen refueling infrastructure as a first mover in Oregon and Washington. Since 2019, the company has been operating a growing network of 12 hydrogen fueling stations for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
Their stations serve commercial fleets including transit buses, delivery trucks, and passenger vehicles. GreenH2 has been working with state agencies and large logistics companies to promote zero emission fleets, and is now able to serve 200 FCEVs daily.
In 2023, as GreenH2 extended their network of stations, they began encountering serious technical challenges involving hydrogen compression:
