Why Fleet Operators Switch to PTO Air Compressors
A tow-behind diesel air compressor is 2,400 or more pounds, costs $27,000-$34,000 to buy, and owns your hitch for every job. A PTO air compressor system, mounted underdeck, is about 400 pounds, $18,000-$20,000 installed, and owns your hitch, bed space, and maintenance budget all at once. At half the cost of tow-behinds, a PTO system frees your budget and your hitch in one move — which is why fleet operations from service and construction to drilling are making the transition. Where some truck-mounted underdeck systems, such as Vanair, struggle with airflow and temperatures in tight spaces, Pangeng engineers each unit to deliver full thermal capacity right from the start.
The main advantage to PTO drive system is “you” get to be eliminated. Get rid of “that” diesel engine, which also means no more fuel cost, no more oil changes, no more filter changes, no more engine rebuilds! Get rid of that trailer, which results in the elimination of registration costs, tire cost, and parking lot headache grinds. Now what about the extra 2000#’s? Over the road, that translates to fewer miles per gallon, and in short hauls, it translates to more brake and drivetrain longevity for your truck!
For the fleet manager tabulating cost per vehicle per year, the calculation is simple. In industry, ancillary tow-behind diesel compressor systems require $3,200-$4,800 worth of annual maintenance and operation costs in addition to the purchase price. PTO compressor systems draw power from the truck engine you are responsible for maintaining so your normalized annual compressed air cost is reduced to nearly zero benefit when amortized over 10 years. That totals up to $20,000-$40,000 per unit.
In addition to financial savings, there’s also a benefit in operations. A small PTO driven air compressor ensures your vehicle is there ready to work – no unhitching, no positioning a trailer, no running a second engine. Your team is connected to air tools and working. This system is space saving, lightweight and built-in to your vehicle.

High efficiency rotary screw air end in our LGF.VF tandem series handles first stage compression, then delivers to a multi-stage piston section for final pressure; this combination of screw for volume, piston for pressure provides performance not achieved by a stand-alone rotary screw air compressor, or a reciprocating compressor. Each air compressor system includes an air tank, all interconnecting piping, installation kit and detailed mounting instructions. For truck installations, chassis-specific bracket drawings and hydraulics-to-drive system connection information is provided.
PTO Air Compressor vs Tow-Behind vs Engine-Driven — Performance Comparison
Deciding between a PTO underdeck system, tow-behind diesel driven compressor, and an engine driven standalone is primarily a matter of CFM requirement, budget and restrictions of the vehicle you are installing on. The below table provides real CFM numbers – not subjective ratings.
| Parameter | PTO Underdeck | Tow-Behind Diesel | Engine-Driven Standalone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical CFM Range | 60–300 CFM | 185–1,600 CFM | 30–185 CFM |
| Max Operating Pressure | 150–250 PSI | 100–150 PSI | 90–175 PSI |
| Duty Cycle | 100% continuous | 100% continuous | 50–70% intermittent |
| Weight | 300–600 lbs | 2,400–4,500 lbs | 200–800 lbs |
| Typical Purchase Price | $18,000–$20,000 | $27,000–$34,000 | $3,000–$8,000 |
| 10-Year Maintenance Cost | Lower ($2,000 savings/unit) | Higher (separate engine) | Moderate |
| Fuel Efficiency | Uses truck engine | Separate diesel engine | Separate gas engine |
| Installation Time | 8–16 hours | N/A (trailer) | 4–8 hours |
| Noise Level (typical) | 65–75 dB | 75–90 dB | 70–85 dB |
| Bed Space Impact | Zero (underdeck) | N/A (external) | Partial bed use |
The PTO underdeck system is the answer when continuous demands of 60-300 CFM compressed air are needed from a work truck without leaving your bed space, truck towing, or traffic maneuverability sacrificed on the trade-off. Tow-behind costs only make sense when your total CFM requirements are exceeding what a PTO drive provides – over 300 CFM for most truck mounted configurations. Engine driven standalone units are the solution for light-duty, intermittent use such that price is the dominant consideration with 185 CFM or less meeting the needs. For service truck fleets making daily runs, the truck mounted air compressor provides the greatest ROI. Pangeng’s all air-cooled design using oversized heat exchangers prevents the common problem of systems operating in a tight underdeck space from failing. Our engineered design takes the reduced airflow under the chassis into account with an increased heat exchanger surface area of an additional 15-20% above the common calculation, enabling your truck engine-mounted air compressor to meet its target operating temperature in sustained tasks.
Applications — Service Trucks, Drilling Rigs & Industrial Vehicles
PTO air compressor systems meet the compressed air needs of any vehicle-powered operation. These six newmarket segments are the major operating groups where we see Pangeng equipment used – each with specific CFM, pressure, and duty cycle needs that determine which model best fits your needs.
SVC
Service Truck Fleets
Tire service, mobile repair mechanics and utility repair trucks are best served by PTO systems. An underdeck model providing60-200 CFM of truck-mounted compressed air keeps the unit within the limits of the vehicle’s GVWR – critical when your utility vehicle already has2,000+1b of tools, parts and crane equipment and there is no room to spare. The net weight savings of2,000 lbs over a tow-behind bring you within legal limits at the weigh station. Fleet operators report improved MPG and fewer DOT weight violations by installing vehicle mounted air compressor systems.
OIL
Oil Field & Drilling Operations
Drilling, well testing, and pipeline purging require mid- to high-pressure air in excess of 300 CFM at 8-15 MPa. Pangeng has designed the VF-C drilling series specifically for this application using Cummins NT855 engines, top V type piston compressors, truck/ skid mount frames for 24 hrs/day use in the field. These units are capable of 1.7-3.45 MPa final pressure from the boosted inlet gas at 1.7-3.45 MPa from the primary compressor to the well head.
CON
Construction & Infrastructure
Pneumatic tools, sandblasting, etc., all use 100% duty cycle for continuous use, not the intermittent duty cycle of a compressor that must sit still for a time between demands to “recover.” Rotary screw PTO systems provide that all day, every day of the week, all while being pretty quiet and idling near zero emissions. Most single-operator situations will do just fine with an 185 CFM unit, but larger crews may require the LGF.VF-15, rated for 530 CFM.
AGR
Agriculture & Farm
Tractor PTO air compressors service tire inflation, grain handling aeration and equipment maintenance needs over large acreage farms. The PTO shaft coupling from the tractor transmission eliminates the need for a separate power source. Smaller models output 60- 100 CFM that can power pneumatic tools, spray systems and grain conveyors.
FIR
Fire Service & Emergency
CAFS (Compressed Air Foam Systems) on fire trucks need to supply a constant, reliable compressed air source at between 100-150 PSI. PTO driven systems will turn on the second they get to the scene of the fire – no warm up period. Because they are lighter than a stand alone systems fire vehicles can carry additional water, foam concentrate or rescue gear.
CHM
Chemical & Energy
Nitrogen injection for improved oil production, hydrogen compression to power cell uses and biogas compression for power generation – Pangeng partial gases line already presents its services to mobile power. Our MZD/XFZD series supplies nitrogen 25-50 MPa for injection at the wellsite and customized solutions for other process gases.

PTO Air Compressor FAQ
Part of the PTO driven air compressor is attached between your truck’s power take-off shaft and your vehicle. By keeping the power source of the air compressor in the truck, the weight, expensive cost and maintenance requirements of a second engine are eliminated, while still providing on demand compressed air to the unit.
Vehicle transmission transmits torque via the PTO shaft to drive the compressor pump, which may be rotary screw air end, or reciprocating piston type. Compressor pump in turn intakes the ambient air, compresses it, with the intake air being passed through aftercooler and moisture separator, it is then fed into an on board air tank, and from there in turn it travels to air-tools, pneumatic systems, or parts of equipment at the PSI needed. Because of the connection to the drive-shaft, the compressor will run all the time while the vehicle engine is running, as long as the PTO is engaged.
Size is determined by your highest (simultaneous) CFM of air demand. Service trucks using impact wrenches or tire equipment normally demand 60-200 CFM. Drilling at high RPM consumes over 300 CFM. Industrial vehicles that feed 2+ pneumatic tools simultaneously often need 500+ CFM. Select your highest simultaneous tool demand + 20% headroom to determine the correct one. The most common single-operator service truck system is 185 CFM of air combined with a 30-gallon receiver tank.
Compared to $27,000-$34,000 for an equivalent tow-behind diesel unit, the same board and engine array installed onto a $18,000-$20,000 yields an upfront $7,000-$16,000 saving per unit. Further savings accrue as the new plant suffers no independent engine charge, trailer registration fees, lower fuel costs for tow weight and insurance. Total cost of ownership over a 10year service life shows an even greater benefit in its favor.
PSI (pounds per square inch): measures pressure-the force of compressed air. CFM (cubic feet per minute): measures volume flow rate-how much air your compressor can provide per minute. Both are important: your air tool will have minimum PSI requirements and maximum CFM requirements to run indefinitely without pressure drops. A 185 CFM compressor at 150 PSI provides the required pressure and volume to accomplish most service truck jobs.
Yes- rotary screw PTO compressors provide 100% duty cycle, capable of operating on-demand without cool down periods. Reciprocating (piston) compressors operate at roughly 50-70% duty cycle and need downtime/ cooloff periods. For prolongeruns -drilling, sandblasting, utilizing multiple air tools- the correct choice is a rotary screw air end. Pangeng screw-piston tandem combination produces for high pressure combined with continuous duty operation provides 60+ CFM to 1,000+ CFM of air in a single high performance, field-ready unit.
Yes. Pangeng has over 20 years experience producing OEM/ODM screw-piston tandem machine configurations and multi-stage boosting compression systems for-field pressures of 50+ MPa and gas types including air, nitrogen, hydrogen, corrosives. We can customize voltage, frequency, pressure, mounting dimensions, and control systems. Give us your specifications; we will tell you precisely how we can match that performance.
